São Nicolau
São Nicolau
One of the most fascinating islands of the Cape Verde archipelago, where high mountains alternate with green valleys ending in a turquoise ocean. In this island you can discover the cradle of the literary movement Claridade, elite culture of Cape Verde, founded in 1936 by Baltasar, Manuel Lopes and Jorge Barbosa.
The capital, Ribeira Brava, was built in a place with difficult access in order to protect the city against pirate attacks. Today there are still traces of the colonial era, such as the Mother Church Liceu and the seminary, as well as the first secondary school that incorporated the archipelago, where many illustrious names of the culture of Cape Verde studied.
