An island with volcanic origin and the highest of the archipelago, with 2829 meters until the top of the volcano, which is the main touristic attraction with a caldera of 8 kilometres. The landscape is awesome, an invitation to take a walk, practise trekking or ride a bike. The climb to the top is a challenge worth accepting. As consequence of the volcanic activity, the island appearance is based in an arid soil with beaches of black sand.

The capital of the island is São Felipe. Its historic centre presents unique architectural features characterized by numerous leftover buildings; prove of the power of the big landowners offering a cultural and historical trip to the past.
